Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced its selection yesterday, beating out eight other cities. It will be located in the Aragon Pavilion and will employ 300 people when fully operational.
Zaragoza will host the headquarters of the State Public Health Agency (AESAPThis was announced by the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, finally revealing the city that will be the headquarters of another state agency that will not be located (as was usual) in Madrid.
This is explained by the decentralization and deconcentration plan for the General State Administration implemented by the Government, which has resulted in the Spanish Space Agency (AEE) being located in Seville and the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA) in A Coruña. Zaragoza prevailed over Barcelona, Granada, León, Lugo, Murcia, Oviedo, and Toledo, which had also offered to host the city.
AESAP will carry out its functions in the areas of public health surveillance, preparedness and response to future emergencies, advice and evaluation, international public health, and health risk information and communication. It is established as an institution of technical and scientific excellence whose objective is the preparation, prevention, detection, and rapid response to threats and risks to public health.
The Ministry of Health has always emphasized that this represents a decisive step towards addressing, with guarantees, the responses in the current context of climate change and its impact on health, as well as new zoonoses or emerging diseases.
AESAP will perform its functions in the areas of public health surveillance, in preparation for and response to future emergencies, advice and assessment, international public health and in Health risk information and communication.
With regard to oversight, it will be the body responsible for coordinating and evaluating the functioning of the Public Health Surveillance Networkas well as monitoring risks and implementing the early warning and rapid response system.
It will also be the body that contributes to the preparation and response of the health system to future public health emergencies, developing preparation and response plans for alerts, risks, current and emerging threats to human health.
In its advisory and evaluation role, it will strengthen coordination with Public Health institutions, promoting networking, and will contribute to the design and evaluation of One Health policies (human health, animal health and environment).
Furthermore, it will promote Spain's international leadership in the detection, monitoring, assessment, and management of health risks. Finally, it will be the center responsible for promoting public awareness and communication of health risks and threats.
In short, this Agency, Darias asserts, which is a priority of this Government's political action, will allow us to provide a response commensurate with the experience lived during the pandemic and to be better prepared and more protected against future risks to the health of our population.
