3 February, 2025The Auditorium of the University of Zaragoza hosted the world-renowned scientific event last Thursday 30th and Friday 31st January, with more than 500 attendees. Angel Lanas, scientific director of the IIS Aragón, describes the congress as 'spectacular'
For two days, Zaragoza became the meeting point for researchers and experts to debate and analyse what healthcare will be like in the future and what challenges professionals will face in the coming decades. Thus, the third edition of the international congress 'Medicine 2044', which was held for the first time in Spain, brought together researchers and experts in the Auditorium of the University of Zaragoza on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st January. More than 60 world-renowned speakers and 500 attendees.
If I had to define it with one word, it would be 'Spectacular'. It was a congress that met the objectives we had. There has not been another congress like this in Zaragoza, as it has touched on many areas, it has ventured into many important things for the future. It has been spectacular in terms of results, everything we had thought we could achieve, we have achieved.
Angel Lanas, scientific director of the IIS Aragon

The agenda for the two days was tight, with parallel presentations to try to offer the maximum possible content.
Honestly, it was a spectacular congress due to the level of the presentations that were given. Unfortunately, as they were parallel, it was not always possible to attend everything that one wanted, we had to choose. But the entire audience was delighted because they were groundbreaking presentations, presentations that really ventured into what was going to happen..

The last day of the conference covered the organ transplant with renowned international experts. Among them are: Sara Garcia Alonso known for being the first Spanish woman to enter the ESA astronaut reserve (The European Space Agency), Lluís Montoliu, PhD in biology and researcher at the CSIC and Anthony Atala, a bioprinting pioneer who currently heads the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine and a researcher at the IIS Aragon Pedro Baptista.
One of the outstanding presentations on this subject by Ángel Lanas was that of Researcher Philip W.Y. Chiu 'Good morning patients. I am your robotic endoscopist':
Professor Philip Chiu's presentation, which not only talked about endoscopic microrobots, robotic endoscopy, where the endoscopist will not be the one handling the endoscope, but rather a robot will be the one entering the different digestive organs. And at the same time, inside that robot there will be other microrobots that will get into impossible channels to reach, for example, a cancer. It was truly spectacular.

After two intense days, which have provided a unique opportunity for national health professionals and scientists to collaborate and share space with experts from more than 12 countries, 'Medicine 2044' is over, an event that paves the way to making Zaragoza a benchmark congress city in Spain.
