16 January 2025The Minister of Health, José Luis Bancalero, and the scientific director of the IIS Aragón, Ángel Lanas, have presented today this scientific event that will take place on January 30 and 31 in the Paraninfo. The IIS Aragón has organized the event, with more than 20 symposiums and conferences with world-class speakers, including two Nobel Prize winners.
Countdown to the international congress in Spain 'Medicine 2044'. This important international event, organized by the Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón), will bring together More than 20 world-renowned speakers in the Auditorium of the University of Zaragoza on January 30 and 31, 2025.
The health adviser, José Luis Bancalero Flores, stressed today that it is an "honour" that this Congress, which brings together world experts from more than 12 countries, is being held in the city of Zaragoza, "a very high-level event". For Bancalero, this congress is so important for three reasons: the prestige of the speakers, since world-class authorities such as two Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry participate; the Congress's vision of the future -Bancalero has highlighted the need for long-term planning- and the multidisciplinary nature of the session.
The minister made these statements at a press conference accompanied by the scientific director of the IIS Aragón, Angel Lanas Arbeloa, also a professor of Medicine at the University of Zaragoza, who has pointed out that this Congress will address key issues for the future of our society, such as the future of health systems, in the face of the expensive new disruptive treatments and technologies that are emerging; the challenge of climate change in diseases or the emergence of microrobots (nanomachines that specifically target very specific targets, for example, to clean bacteria).
With a programme packed with high-level symposia and conferences, 'Medicine 2044' will feature the participation of international figures in the various aspects of medicine that will be addressed. Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2004, Aaron Ciechanover, recognized for his research in fundamental biological processes, will address the topic of ethics in precision medicine of the future, while the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2006, Roger Kornberg, will address the topic of therapy and early diagnosis of infections.
Other experts such as the doctor in Chemistry Samuel Sanchez Ordonez, will present the paper 'Healing Microrobots', a topic that delves into the innovation of microrobots for medical applications.
The future of health systems, a topic of great social importance, will be addressed from different perspectives with the participation of experts such as the former Minister of Health in the Basque Government, Rafael Bengoa.
Laura Lettuce, national research award winner and leading Spanish researcher of the Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications group at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Barcelona, will talk about advances in the treatment of multi-resistant superbacteria, while Carlos Martín, one of our most prestigious researchers, will do so on the fight against tuberculosis. Robert Langer, an American engineer, pioneer in controlled drug release and undisputed world leader in the field of nanomedicine, will speak on how to respond to global health challenges through biotechnology.

Other notable names include scientist and biologist, Sara Garcia Alonso, known for being the first Spanish woman to join the ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut reserve, will address medicine in space with her presentation 'Primary and Emergency Medicine in Space'. The event will also feature Lluís Montoliu, a doctor in biology and researcher at the CSIC, who will participate in the debate on editing the human genome under the title 'Human Ingenuity'.
In addition, the 'Medicine 2044' congress, which will have more than 400 national and international attendees, will address other advances in medicine, such as artificial intelligence, with the national expert Prof. Francisco Herrera, robotic surgery and endoscopy with Philip Chiu, a world expert from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the creation of artificial organs with the Nobel Prize candidates Hans Clever and Antony Atala, or how to end cancer with the participation of world experts such as Mariano Barbacid, Nadir Arber, Ursula Jacob or Marta Trapero.
Other topics addressed include nutrition and exercise, which have accompanied the development of human diseases and will determine the future of humanity, highlighting the participation of Yannis Pitsiladis and Iris Dotan, and the future of inflammatory bowel diseases, among others.
Finally, among other topics, we will highlight a symposium on the future of eye diseases, the development of the Cyborg man or the treatment and prevention of diseases through intestinal microbiota. In short, an exceptional opportunity for professionals and researchers to exchange ideas and discover innovative solutions to the challenges of the sector, highlighting the advances that could transform medicine in the coming years.
