Program
19 h. Retinal pathology and cardiovascular health.
Ophthalmological pathologies that cause blindness are primarily related to the aging of the population and vascular risk factors such as diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. These include retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. We will explore the relationship of these risk factors, especially cardiovascular risk factors, with visual pathologies.
- Dr. María Sopeña Pinilla. Ophthalmology specialist at the Miguel Servet University Hospital. Researcher at the Aragón Health Research Institute.
19.30 h. Glaucoma and cardiovascular health.
Glaucoma is a chronic disease of the optic nerve in which the loss of nerve fibers causes a decrease in the field of vision, which, in advanced cases, can lead to blindness. To prevent glaucoma from progressing, the main treatment focuses on controlling eye pressure. Furthermore, proper control of cardiovascular factors is essential to ensure adequate blood flow to the optic nerve. Avoiding smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, diabetes, high blood pressure, and low blood pressure are all conditions that, as we will see, have a negative impact, and keeping them well controlled helps us curb this disease.
- Dr. Elena Pardina Claver. Ophthalmology specialist at the Alcañiz Regional Hospital.
Moderated by:
- Dr. Isabel Pinilla Lozano. Ophthalmology specialist at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital. Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Zaragoza. Researcher at the Aragón Health Research Institute.
