A total of 14 urologists from different Spanish cities have participated in the 'I Allium Ureteral Stent Training Course', held on February 18 and 19 at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital, in Zaragoza, to learn about this technique and the results achieved with the placement of this device, which solves stenotic problems.
This novel endoscopic technique, which is performed with a combined endoscopic and radioscopic approach, began to be used in Zaragoza in the years 2017-2018 jointly by Dr. Jorge Rioja, with Dr. Mallén, at the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza.
The technique consists of “the placement of a new device that allows solving a stenotic problem, a stenosis of the ureter that may be due to malignant causes (tumors) or due to benign fibrosis secondary to other surgeries. And it also allows ureteral fistulas to be solved,” explained Dr. Jorge Rioja, professor of Urology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza linked to the Urology service of the Lozano Blesa Clinical Hospital and principal investigator of the HCUZ Urology Research group of the Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón).
Doctors Victoria Capapé, Benjamín Blasco and Jorge Rioja began applying this technique at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital in July 2019, being pioneers at the national level in this center in the use of this device to solve very complex surgical problems such as fistulas. ureteral. The development of this technique, knowledge and experience led the company that developed the device (Allium Medical) to propose the organization of a course to disseminate their results and experience.
For two days, presentations were made on the technique and the results that have been achieved so far in Zaragoza, in addition to carrying out a surgical day with four complex cases in which eight stents were placed in four different patients and which included the assistance of 14 urologists from all over Spain.
All patients were at high surgical risk, as they had undergone multiple gynecological or general surgery surgeries and had abdomens that were not surgically approachable. “It was contraindicated to perform any additional surgery and they had problems because they developed a urinary fistula. We solved it.”
All surgeons were able to see this surgery, which was broadcast live through audiovisual equipment. The feedback from the urologists has been very positive, which is why the company has chosen the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza as a training center in Spain and more courses are already being organized, which will take place throughout this year.
The 'I Allium Ureteral Stent Training Course' was organized by Dr. Benjamín Blasco; Prof. Jorge Rioja; Dr. Victoria Capapé; Dr. Gemma Aleson and Dr. Javier Longás. In addition, it was sponsored by the Navarro Aragonese Scientific Urological Society (AUNAR).
