14 July 2023Aragón seeks a more effective treatment against the most common brain tumor in children with cancer
17 July 2023La Childhood obesity has doubled in Aragon and Overweight has almost tripled in the last 20 years, while the lack of exercise among Aragonese children, together with nutritional issues, are, to a large extent, responsible for this situation. This is the starting point of a study of research, led by el Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) together with the Alcampo Foundation, for which 300 children and young people from 6 to 15 years old and their families starting in September, to promote healthy living habits.
The study is led by the Professor Luis Moreno Aznar and Dr. Pilar De Miguel-Etayo of the Department of Physiatry and Nursing from the Faculty of Health Sciences and researchers from the University of Zaragoza in the group Growth, Exercise, Nutrition and Development (GENUD), assigned to IIS Aragon.
El ALASS Program (Food, Physical Activity, Health and Sustainability) born with him target to promote the adherence to the Mediterranean diet and an active lifestyle among Zaragoza schoolchildren with the goal to reduce the risk of some chronic diseases in this group non-communicable, such as overweight, obesity and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases. The Alcampo Foundation has contributed 27.000 Euros for this project within the framework of its call #Juntosnosalimentamosbien.
This program, which includes food and nutrition education at the individual, family and community level, along with physical activity, seek participation of 300 children and young people between 6 and 15 years old, It will begin in September 2023 and will take place mainly in the Valdefierro-Oliver neighborhood. His duration will be two school years and will include different stages: initial, maintenance, reminder and evaluation. Fun activities will be carried out that promote the health of the participants, as well as various initiatives related to food and nutritional education focused on the Mediterranean dietary pattern, physical activity, health and sustainability, through free workshops. The development of the project will be carried out with the participants separated into groups: a control group, with 150 participants, and another intervention group, with another 150 children and adolescents, in order to assess whether an intervention on lifestyle and eating habits (food and nutritional education for 20 months) improves the global health of children and young people.
