An investigation on nutrition and health from the University of Zaragoza requests the participation of 45 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12 who are overweight. The objective is evaluate the effect it has on health of children the consumption of some bakery products in which work has been done to improve nutritional value, reducing saturated fats, sugars and also increasing the percentage of fiber.
In this way, it will be possible to know if the participants in the project after the inclusion of the new products They have a better cardiovascular profile, fewer inflammatory indicators and a better feeling of satiety after the incorporation of the improved products.
La researcher Alba Santaliestra, from the research group GENUD (Growth, Exercise, Nutrition and Development), led by professor Luis Moreno of the Faculty of Health Sciences, will coordinate the MEDKIDS project (Research and Development of new food products for the preparation of a healthy basket for infant feeding: Nutritional intervention with bread and pastry products). The GENUD group is part of the Aragon Agri-Food Institute (IA2), UNIZAR-CITA mixed university center.
"During the next 6 months We will accompany families on a weekly basis to provide them with adapted menu to your child's tastes and preferences. We will follow the recommendations of the Mediterranean diet, along with some weekly tips to promote a healthy lifestyle and diet,” explains Alba Santaliestra, dietitian, nutritionist and postdoctoral researcher at GENUD.
Furthermore, in each of the menus current recommendations will be included on which the diet should be based, prioritizing the consumption of foods of plant origin, fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. We will also help families balance protein sources, achieving a balance in the intake of meat, fish and eggs.
We will work on pillars of the Mediterranean diet, in which each week we will provide specific advice that will include everything from how to achieve a distribution of nutrients and food groups, through the importance of basing the diet on groups of plant origin, as well as providing tools for menu planning in house or reading labels, among many other topics.

With the results of all the tests, families will be provided with a report with all the health parameters of the participants, as well as the overall results of the project.
