September 16, 2025The Aragon Health Research Institute is launching this research whose objective is prevention and trying to establish clear patterns.
The Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) is participating in a pioneering international study to identify risk factors, both genetic and clinical, for the causes of suicide. 300 volunteer patients in the autonomous community who have had previous attempts. 50.000 people worldwide will participate.
The goal is prevention, designing personalized strategies, and attempting to establish clear patterns prior to a suicide attempt, such as changes in routines and even digital behavior.
Yolanda López del Hoyo, a researcher with the Mental Health group at the IIS Aragón, explained on Hora 14 Aragón that she seeks to "investigate all the variables involved in suicidal behavior, in the intention to commit suicide, and to identify risk factors of different types, such as genetic ones—which we know are at the root—as well as behavioral and clinical factors and other behaviors."
This international research is groundbreaking because it will link all possible variables. "Analyzing the interaction of all these factors has never been done before, nor on such a large scale," explains López del Hoyo.
The eligibility requirements are to be over 18 years of age, or, in the case of adolescents, over 12 years of age with parental consent, and to have made at least one suicide attempt during their lifetime. All information is collected anonymously and encrypted.
