The scientific journal Frontiers in Psychology has published the study "Loneliness and the use of emotional support lines in Spain: a 20-year observational study", in which he participates Rosa Magallón, researcher at Aragonese Research Group in Primary Care (GAIAP) from the Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragon).
The work analyzes a total of 2.194.175 anonymized contacts registered throughout Spain between 2004 and 2023 by the International Association Telephone of Hope (ASITES). The objective of the research was to understand the main reasons why people use emotional support lines and to study how these reasons vary according to age, sex, and the passage of time.
Among the main results, the loneliness and communication difficulties These appear as the most frequent reasons for contact among those analyzed, followed by depressed mood and anxiety-related problems.
Loneliness was particularly prevalent among older adults, although it was also present among younger population groups. Meanwhile, suicidal thoughts and suicidal crises were more frequently reported among adolescents and young adults.
The results highlight the value of emotional support lines in identifying the psychological and social needs of the population. In addition to providing immediate assistance to people experiencing difficulties, the anonymized records from these services constitute an important source of information for guiding mental health prevention, intervention, and care strategies.
