November 17, 2020According to a study by the Primary Care Research Institute (IDIAP-Jordi Gol) based on 375.000 people and published by the 'European Journal of Preventive' magazine, on World Disease Day.
93% of people who suffer from type 2 diabetes have a high or very high risk of suffering a heart attack or cerebral thrombosis, according to a study by the Primary Care Research Institute (IDIAP-Jordi Gol) based on 375.000 people with a average age of 70 years.
The study, which was published this Saturday in the "European Journal of Preventive" magazine of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), coinciding with World Diabetes Day, warns that "prevention in these patients with type 2 diabetes treated in primary care must be an urgent priority.
Research in Catalonia
The research, which has analyzed data from almost 375.000 people in Catalonia, also points out that "half of the patients in the very high risk group had no history of heart disease, which means that they would not be candidates to receive medication to prevent heart attacks." and cerebrovascular accidents", according to Manel Mata-Cases, researcher at the Ciber de Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) and the IDIAP-Jordi Gol, one of the coordinators of this work.
This is a cross-sectional study that used the database of the Information System for the Development of Research in Primary Care (SIDIAP), which includes 74% of the total population of Catalonia.
This database contains anonymous and longitudinal patient information extracted from the electronic medical history system (e-CAP) used by all primary care centers of the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS).
The study population included 373.185 people over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, with an average age of 70,1 years, 45,2% of them women.
High blood pressure, cholesterol and smokers
About 72% of the patients studied had high blood pressure, 45% were obese, 60% had high serum cholesterol and 14% were current smokers.
The researchers calculated the probability that each participant would suffer a fatal heart attack or stroke within the next 10 years using categories in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines on diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The three categories established in these guidelines are: very high risk (above 10%), high risk (between 5% and 10%) and moderate risk (below 5%).
To be classified as very high risk, patients must have established cardiovascular disease, such as a previous heart attack or stroke, or other health-threatening conditions, such as severe kidney failure or diabetic retinopathy, or at least three risk factors. cardiovascular (advanced age, high blood pressure, high serum cholesterol, smoking, obesity).
