The Mediterranean diet may act as a protective factor against the genetic risk of obesity in European preadolescents.

This is demonstrated by a study led by the GENUD group (IIS Aragón and the University of Zaragoza), which has just been published in the journal Pediatric Obesity with an analysis of 2000 participants, between 2 and 16 years old, over three different years.

The Mediterranean diet from an early age could help prevent excess weight in childhood.

The study, led by the IIS Aragón and the University of Zaragoza, analyzed more than 1.200 children between the ages of 3 and 6 in seven Spanish cities. Children with a higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a lower BMI and less total and abdominal fat, especially in the case of girls.

A new tool evaluates the relationship between the Mediterranean diet and health in preschoolers

The MED4CHILD questionnaire, created by a multidisciplinary team that includes researchers from the GENUD group (IIS Aragón and the University of Zaragoza), will optimize the monitoring of eating habits in childhood and will contribute to improving public health interventions aimed at preventing diet-related diseases.
