Prostate cancer will be one of the most diagnosed cancers in men in Spain in 2021, with an estimate of 35.764 cases, according to data from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology.
Only 54% of Spanish men know where the prostate is, the percentage being even lower among women (39%), according to research carried out by GenesisCare and the charity Prostate Cancer Research, on the occasion of the Men's Health Awareness Month.
The study shows that the knowledge gap about prostate cancer is universal across all genders. In this sense, only 46% of Spaniards Know the symptoms that could indicate a prostate problem or prostate cancer.
In this line, support network is essential to encourage men to seek medical advice. 17% of men who have received a diagnosis of prostate cancer say that it was their partner who convinced them to go to the doctor and 12% say that it was the partner who observed the symptoms.
In addition to partners, 34% of men who have received a cancer diagnosis indicate that they felt troubled with symptoms he didn't understand.
For their part, oncologists and family doctors play an undeniable key role in transmitting information and trust, since, despite the fact that more than 90% of men know that an early diagnosis of cancer can save their lives, 31% admit that they tend to delay visiting the doctor.
"The health of the prostate is essential, for this the safest method is routine check-ups in order to ensure good prostate health and early detection of the disease. The later the tumor is detected, the more advanced its stage and the worse the prognosis., as well as with less probability shorter and more comfortable treatments for the patient can be applied," commented the medical director of GenesisCare, Dr. Escarlata López.
