October 2, 2019Mental and neurological disorders affect 700 million people worldwide. High figures that do not avoid the great lack of knowledge that exists in a large part of society in this regard.
Mental and neurological disorders affect 700 million people worldwide, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). At the European level, there are 30 million cases and, in relation to Spain, half a million people suffer from mental disorders, which represents 19,5% of the population, being responsible for 40% of chronic diseases.
Every year, more than a million people die from this cause and many others attempt suicide. Given the high death rates and the consequences they have on people close to the victim, on society and on an entire country, suicide prevention will be the central theme of this year's World Mental Health Day, which will be celebrated next October 10. Under the message 'Connect with life', the day will serve to make a positive call for attention, all with the aim of raising awareness and mobilizing the population about this problem.
A context in which the lifestyle that currently predominates in society also significantly influences, with the corresponding social and work pressure that exists and which makes reactive depressive and anxiety disorders two of the most frequent conditions in this sense.
Although ailments that affect mental health are the main cause of disability in the country, currently, there is still a lot of ignorance about this type of pathologies, which largely affect the young population. Social discrimination, bullying, drug use or sexual abuse are the main causes that have led to 30% of young people have suffered from one of these diseases, with the vast majority feeling reluctant to seek professional help. These mental disorders can cause other types of more serious pathologies and even suicide, which is the second cause of death among young people between 15 and 29 years old.
