Title

European Perioperative Medical Networking.

Description

Surgery is indicated to cure or alleviate numerous physical ailments; However, it represents a significant stress that often leads to adverse effects unrelated to the treatment goals. These adverse effects have profound negative impacts on the ability to perform activities of daily living, subsequently affecting quality of life (Litwin et al. 1999; Phillips-Bute et al. 2006).

Multimodal surgical rehabilitation, also known as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) or Fast-track Surgery, involves the application of a series of perioperative procedural measures and strategies aimed at patients who are going to undergo a surgical procedure with the objective of reduce the secondary stress caused by the surgical intervention and thus achieve a better patient recovery and reduce complications and mortality.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are care programs based on scientific evidence and focused on postoperative recovery. They cover all aspects of patient care and require multidisciplinary management, with the participation of various specialists (Ruiz-Tovar J. et al.2019).

The Eupemen project aims to train multidisciplinary professionals directly involved in the perioperative procedure, in addition to creating a network of teachers with the capacity to teach these groups in hospitals and audit the correct application of the protocols in a standardized and homogeneous manner.

Objectives and Results

The objective of this project is to adapt and implement the ERAS protocol in hospitals to:
● Improve the patient's quality of life (reducing side effects and improving the treatment experience) and
● Improve the healthcare system, shortening the length of the hospital stay and, consequently, saving money.
