September 12, 2024A competition open to all citizens to inspire and reflect on the importance of health and research in our lives. Share your story about science, health and research
The Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) in collaboration with the patient associations AECC, ASPANOA, ASAPME and ATADES, and with the involvement of the Aragonese Patient Forum, launches the 'Patient in Science Short Story Contest' within the framework of the Patient in Science project, a project of the IIS Aragón that has the funding and collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).
Objective of the contest
The contest aims to encourage reflection and share points of view, concerns, experiences, about health services, research, science, care work or the experience of patients, and their environment in the health field. It is also intended highlight the relationship of these aspects with people's lives. Wanted to inspire to patients, health professionals, researchers and the general public.
Through the creation of stories, the focus will be on different aspects that are important to the writer or that highlight how research and health have a positive impact on people's quality of life. This contest seeks bring science closer to citizens and change their relationship with research and science. Through inspiring stories, the aim is to promote greater empathy and understanding among the different groups that coexist in/with the health field.
The initiative is designed so that anyone can participate, regardless of their experience or writing skills. The aim of this initiative is to generate a space for dialogue and expression that enriches knowledge and sensitivity about the crucial importance of research and healthcare in the well-being of society.
The writings must be unpublished and original stories, and have the health field as a central theme (research, care work, first-hand experiences as a patient or professional, work of patient associations, collaboration between different groups, experiences or reflections on care and support at different stages of life, for example). They can be real or fictional stories and of any subgenre (essay, fable, story…).
What will we do with the stories?
We will publish, edited and laid out, all participating writings on the website www.pacienteenciencia.com .
In addition, we will edit a book in digital format with the writings. This book will be available for download on the project website. And with prior authorization from the author, we would like to create entries on the Aragon Health Research Institute website related to papers submitted to this initiative.
Finally, with the selection of the stories that best fit the philosophy and objectives of the Patient in Science project, we will publish a book in printed format.
The authors will retain the rights to their submitted writings. Participation in this initiative implies the acceptance of use by IIS Aragón for the actions described above.
What should my story be like?
The length of the story will be between 500 and 1000 words.
Participants are asked to try to present the writing, as far as possible, to facilitate the evaluation of the writings and subsequent editing and layout, with the following characteristics:
- Submit the document in digital file format Word or other compatible text editor.
- Sheet size DIN A4 (default size of Word editor)
- Source: Times New Roman
- Size from the source: 12
- Double space
- Spanish
Rules:
- can be presented two stories per person.
- The works must be original and unpublished and cannot be subject to any editing commitment.
- They will be Rejected texts that incur racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, that glorify terrorism and other attacks against equality, dignity and respect for people.

The works may be submitted between September 11 and October 20 2024.
The texts will be sent to the email info@pacienteenciencia.com format PDF.
In the affair The email must include “Patient in Science Storytelling Competition” and the document with the story and a will be included contact number or email.
In addition, the email must specify the Name and surname of the author and the capacity in which he/she participates (researcher, healthcare professional, member of a healthcare entity, patient, member of a patient association or the category that each author considers).
Are there set prizes?
the contest It does not contemplate a prize, either monetary or in kind. Authors selected for the printed edition of the book will receive a copy of the same.
La final list of selected will be published on the Paciente en Ciencia website and on its social networks. Authors will then be contacted to gather the information necessary for their recognition.
In addition, all texts sent to participate will be published in the digital book in PDF on the Patient in Science website.
Recognition
As specified, with the selection of the stories that best fit the philosophy and objectives of the Patient in Science project a book will be published in printed format.
In addition, the authors of the selected writings will receive a free copy of copy from the book and a accrediting diploma. These will be delivered and personal interviews will be conducted with the authors, which will be published on the website www.patientscience.com, as well as on various social networks.
What is Patient in Science?
The project "Patient in Science” is an initiative of the IAragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) in collaboration with patient associations AECC, ASAPME, ASPANOA and ATADES and with the involvement of Aragonese Patient Forum. The project has the financing and collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).
The program searches enhance the interaction between citizens, patients and the research group with the objectives of increasing knowledge and understanding of science and technology in the field of health, and facilitating the participation of patients in research and innovation projects.
“Patient in Science” consists of training actions and activities in which patients and citizens in general, together with researchers, will generate solutions and content of various kinds that combine creativity and scientific rigor.
The project, open to all citizens, is closely linked to the strategic initiative of IIS Aragón to incorporate citizens and patients into the Institute's research and innovation. Through activities in person and online In Aragón we want to bring basic and applied clinical research in health services closer to citizens to increase knowledge and understanding of science and technology.
