Gynecologist Daniel Orós takes over as scientific director following the upcoming retirement of Ángel Lanas
El Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) has as new scientific director to the doctor Daniel Oros LopezProfessor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza, specialist physician of the Obstetrics and Gynecology service of the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital of the Aragonese capital and principal investigator of the consolidated group of excellence “Placenta"of the IIS Aragón."
Dr. Orós replaces the professor of Medicine at the University of Zaragoza in his position. Angel Lanas Arbeloa, who is leaving the position because retirement.
Gynecologist Daniel Orós graduated in Reproductive in the University of ZaragozaShe completed her residency at the Hospital Clínic, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and earned her doctorate from the University of Barcelona. She furthered her advanced training as a specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and its associated research center IDIBAPS, and obtained a Master's degree in Research Methodology in Health Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
His career includes clinical activity, translational research y scientific managementWith experience in leading established research groups, training researchers, and securing sustained competitive funding, she has spearheaded the development of research talent through national human resources programs, including Río Hortega, PFIS, and Juan Rodés contracts from the Carlos III Health Institute. She is a regular participant in scientific evaluation processes and academic and societal governance bodies. Institutionally, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Perinatal Medicine Section, 2012–2022) and the Aragonese Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics (2018–2022). She has received several awards for scientific communication and regularly collaborates on national and international training and scientific activities in maternal-fetal medicine.
The new director wanted to highlight the career of his predecessor, Dr. Ángel Lanaswhose work has decisively contributed to the institute's advancement and the consolidation of its role as a leading institution in the public research system. Lanas, the IIS's scientific director since its inception, has been a major driving force behind health research in Aragon, with a renowned international career. He currently continues his clinical work as head of the Gastroenterology Department at the University Clinical Hospital, his teaching as a professor of Medicine, and serves as Vice Dean of Institutional Relations, Research, and Infrastructure at the Faculty of Medicine of Zaragoza.
With the appointment of Orós, the IIS Aragón continues to advance in its strategy of scientific strengthening and talent promotion, guaranteeing the continuity of priority research lines and openness to new challenges.
Dr. Oros has been a Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute (OMPHI) of the University of Oxford since 2016, with extended stays funded by competitive programs of the Carlos III Health Institute, the main public body for biomedical research and public health in Spain. Throughout his career, he has undertaken training and collaborative stays at other internationally renowned centers, such as Thomas Jefferson Hospital (Philadelphia, USA) and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (UK), as well as at other centers of excellence at the national level. Between 2016 and 2018, he was selected for the international GLOBE (Global Leadership & Organizational Behavior Effectiveness) program, which focuses on training emerging scientific leaders in Obstetrics at an international level.
His scientific output includes more than 60 indexed articles, mostly published in high international impact journals: three out of four in publications in the first quartile and more than two-thirds in journals that are among the 10% most influential and cited in their specialty.
In the field of publishing and scientific evaluation, he has been Associate Editor of the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a member of the editorial boards of PLOS One, Maternal Health, Neonatology and Perinatology, and Clinical and Research in Gynecology and Obstetrics. He also participates as an expert evaluator for the National R&D Plan.
The “Placenta” research group led by Dr. Oros focuses its research activity on pathologies of placental origin and their impact on what is called “fetal programming”, a concept in biomedicine that explains how the environment in which a fetus develops —nutrition, maternal stress, hormones, inflammation, toxins, etc.— can influence its health throughout its life.
This is a multidisciplinary group that integrates medical specialists with basic researchers (obstetrics, pediatrics, nursing, molecular biology, veterinary sciences, and biochemistry), with the aim of developing translational research for a better understanding of placental pathophysiology and fetal development. Recognized as the best emerging research group at the IISA in 2018, it already has a consolidated scientific output with numerous established international collaborations, as well as a high capacity for teaching and training. Furthermore, the research group is part of the Maternal-Infant Research Network (SAMID), RETIC of the Carlos III Institute.
