8 February, 2022Aimed at immunosuppressed patients, Evusheld is from AstraZeneca and, according to the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, it will be available this February.
El new drug from AstraZeneca "which prevents covid-19", the Evusheld, will arrive in Spain "this month of February." This was stated by the Minister of Health, Caroline Darias, this Friday, the day on which a purchase agreement for 30.000 doses was signed with the pharmaceutical company for the distribution of the treatment.
Under the name Evusheld this antiviral It has an efficiency of 83% and applies with a puncture in each buttock. However, who can administer it? Is it aimed at a specific group or the entire population?
The minister has described the signing of this agreement as “magnificent news” and, especially, for these immunosuppressed patients, among whom are those who suffer from cancer. In addition, it will benefit people with immunodeficiencies, solid organ transplants or people treated for hematological malignancies with medications that inhibit their ability to generate immunity against the antigen injected with the vaccines.
"It is not a treatment as such. It is a prophylaxis recommended for a specific group that also serves as alternative to those who do not produce neutralizing antibodies with vaccines. That is, if for whatever specific reasons someone does not generate them, they are administered with this antiviral," says immunologist Nacho de Blas.
Its administration is carried out with two monoclonal doses -artificial proteins- "what they do is replace the antibodies that we have and thus increase immunity", explains De Blas. "The protection against a possible infection with this antiviral is approximately six months," says the expert.
