September 13, 2019On World Action Day against the disease, experts insist on the need to prescribe correct treatment and promote a healthy lifestyle to prevent the disease.
Up to 9,2% of the Aragonese population suffers from migraine, which means that more than 100.000 Aragonese suffer from this neurological disease. This type of headache has a great impact on patients. On World Migraine Action Day, experts insist on the need to prescribe adequate treatment and promote lifestyles that help prevent the condition.
But why do some people suffer from this disease? Sonia Santos, neurologist at the Zaragoza Clinical Hospital and coordinator of the Headache study group of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), remembers that its causes are not completely defined. Up to 70% of patients have a genetic background, but she recalls that the studies that have been done have not been able to identify a specific gene that causes the disease. Meanwhile, she admits that the drop in estrogen that a woman suffers at a certain time in the menstrual cycle also acts as a trigger.
Although migraine can affect children, the most disabling period is between 16 and 46 years of age. Santos remembers that it is a disease that causes significant absenteeism from work, but also "presenteeism", since "the worker is not one hundred percent during his work day," says Santos, who explains that the Clinical Hospital has two specific consultations. every week and an extra one, every fifteen days. In total, they see about 160 patients per month.
