On November 19, 20 and 21, 2021, the meeting of the World Council of WONCA, World Organization of Family Physicians, took place.
It has been the first online General Council and has had numerous challenges: the connection of family doctors from all over the planet synchronously (more than 290 representatives), the development of a tight 3-day agenda, organized through presentation of 5-minute videos where the topics and proposals were presented. The development of voting on the agreements reached through a secure voting platform. To speed up the decisions of the assembly, the videos of the topics to be decided were available since October so that all representatives of the countries of the world, national medical organizations, scientific associations and universities with departments of family medicine WONCA affiliates could consult and consider their vote on said proposals.
Numerous resolutions have been approved since changes in the statutes, financing agreements, the positions of coordinators of working groups and special interest groups have been renewed on key topics such as equity in health, women, quality and safety, emergencies, environment and health of the planet among others. Finally, the new positions of the board of directors have been elected for the next two years, with Dr. María Pilar Astier Peña, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza, being elected as the new member of the board of directors.
Family doctors have adapted to the new situation on the planet and have managed to hold an online meeting in times of pandemic and with zero CO2 emissions, also ensuring the health of the planet to continue creating a great global team of family medicine professionals of the future, prepared to continue improving.
