29 April 2020The Spanish Association of Pediatrics calls for calm in the face of this clinical condition that "can be triggered by various infectious agents and has a well-established treatment."
The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) studies the relationship between COVID-19 in children and a clinical condition known as Pediatric Shock that can be triggered by various infectious agents, and is compiling existing information with documented evidence that has been described in different countries.
In a statement, pediatricians respond to international information published on several serious clinical conditions in the pediatric population in other countries, related to COVID-19.
They call for calm since this clinical condition known as Pediatric Shock "is very rare" and the Spanish health model allows action at the first symptoms.
"It is a known condition, which can be triggered by various infectious agents and has a well-established treatment," underlines the AEP.
Furthermore, they explain that, at the moment, it has not been established whether these cases of Pediatric Shock are a coincidence in time with the COVID-19 pandemic or have some type of causal relationship, and they insist that clinical practice has revealed that in the vast majority of cases, COVID-19 is mild in children.
However, and as a normal procedure in the context of infectious diseases, the AEP has sent professional information to pediatricians and other doctors who see children, since Primary Care pediatricians are the first step in health care and it is possible an early suspected diagnosis of pathologies that require immediate intervention.
They insist that parents must be attentive to warning symptoms in children, both due to COVID-19 and other pathologies that continue to be a reason to go to pediatric emergencies.
For his part, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Ministry of Health, Fernando Simón, has expressed the opinion that it would be necessary to carry out a study on the relationship between this syndrome and the coronavirus in children, although he has admitted that "if Pediatricians have detected it and are worried, obviously there is a possibility that there is something behind it."
