World Multiple Myeloma Day: "A relapse is expected, but there are many other treatments"
September 5, 2022Until September 30, Gran Vía in Zaragoza hosts the exhibition 'Putting a face to research', an initiative of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) that seeks to make visible the work of researchers and scientists to achieve new elements for early detection of the disease and more effective treatments. The exhibition shows a brief description of the projects led by ten researchers in the community, six of them from the Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón), and the panels have a QR code that offers an explanatory video starring each researcher.
The participating researchers are
-Alberto Jiménez Schumacher: Idea Seed vaccines to prevent cancer (IIS Aragón).
– Patricia Sancho Andrés: Idea Semilla y Ayuda Worldwide on pancreatic cancer (IIS Aragón).
– Eduardo Ruiz López: Predoctoral help on new methods of brain tumor imaging diagnosis (IIS Aragón).
– Noelia Mendoza Calvo: Predoctoral assistance on the development of new imaging probes for diffuse truncal glioma (IIS Aragón).
– Cecilia Pesini Martín: Predoctoral help to study cells natural killer (IIS Aragon).

It is estimated that cancer will be the leading cause of mortality worldwide and an increase in its incidence of 21,6 million new cases is expected each year by 2030. Therefore, for the Spanish Association Against Cancer, research is essential and it has been 50 years since it began to finance oncological research projects. In Aragon, more than 700.000 euros have been allocated to projects carried out in the community, funds obtained thanks to the support of society through donations from individuals, contributions in piggy banks, events, business collaborations, donations or legacies.
The inauguration was attended by Patxi García, director in Aragon of AECC, and Javier Perfecto, member of the technical committee. The urban planning councilor of the Zaragoza City Council, Víctor Serrano, also attended. IIS Aragón was represented at the inauguration by researchers Alberto Jiménez Schumacher, Patricia Sancho, Alba Royo and Eduardo Ruiz, the scientific director Ángel Lanas and the executive director Óscar López.
