28 May 2021The initiative arose during the months of confinement to make hospital admission more bearable. From Miguel Servet it spread to other hospitals
The ICU nurses of the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, for their project, Embracing Hearts, are the winners of the Aragonese of the Year award. Natalia Becerril, nurse at the multipurpose ICU at the Miguel Servet University Hospital, and Luis Callén, its manager, have taken the stage: “When this nightmare began more than 14 months ago, the hospital became a bunker. The isolation of the hospital was a shield that protected life, but many patients were left alone with a disease with limited treatment and without their loved ones. The ICU infirmary became the family of the patients and acted as a link with the outside world."
Letters, voice messages, song lists, videos... were some of the channels used by family members and anonymous citizens to communicate with those who were having the worst time during the months of confinement: the sick who remained admitted to hospitals separated from family and loved ones. The project Hugging Hearts was born to break that barrier of loneliness that the virus had raised. At that time, at the beginning of the pandemic, the situation was insane. The four ICUs of Servetus were full. And it was at the worst moment when health personnel drew strength from weaknesses and he did his best by extending his work hours to also attend to the emotional and mental health of those affected by the virus. With the endorsement of the Nursing management and the Hospital Management Committee, the project was launched in record time, which extended it to other ICUs.
Through tablets or mobile devices, the displays of affection reached the very doors of the UCIS. Video calls filled the empty time of the plants by establishing a daily communication mechanism. An email was opened to which songs, audios or even poems were sent to accompany those admitted. The society also responded and donations of technological material began to make it easier to maintain this communication channel. The initiative served as a link in the middle of the distance. It helped fight feelings of fear, sadness and anxiety.
