The incidence of gastric cancer decreases every year in Spain
November 29, 2019In 1994, 7.500 cases of AIDS were diagnosed, while in 2018 they did not reach 500. The peak of mortality occurred in 1995, with 5.500 deaths.
The 3.244 new HIV diagnoses in 2018 confirm a "slightly downward" trend for 10 years, except in the group of men who have sex with men (MSM), of foreign origin, who, according to the Government, do not import the infection but that in 80% of cases they are infected in Spain.
According to the HIV and AIDS Epidemiological Surveillance report, released this Thursday, 2018 new cases were reported in 3.244, the majority in men (85,3%). Del Amo wanted to make it clear that the MSM group, of foreign origin, acquires HIV after emigrating to Spain, although he has pointed out that it is a group that must be targeted in prevention campaigns.
For her part, the minister has stressed the importance of this group having universal access to health and social services, since exclusion facilitates infections.
Del Amo has also highlighted the recent approval of the financing of the pre-exposure pill aimed at high-risk groups such as MSM of foreign origin.
Likewise, he stressed that the data does not show an increase in new diagnoses in younger kids, although "the preventive message is essential", since an increase in sexually transmitted diseases is observed.
The exhibition, organized by the Ministry on the occasion of World AIDS Day, which is celebrated on December 1, aims to remember that it has been more than three decades since this unknown, contagious and deadly disease arrived in Spain.
In 1994, 7.500 cases of AIDS were diagnosed, while in 2018 they did not reach 500. The peak of mortality occurred in 1995, with 5.500 deaths.
Carcedo has emphasized that there are currently treatments that do not cure the disease but make it chronic and has hoped that HIV will disappear with the appearance of new drugs "and we will stop doing these campaigns."
