Gold and silver chemistry: targeted therapies to treat cancer
25 March, 2022Health has purchased 344.000 doses of Paxlovid, indicated for mild patients but at risk of progressing to severity.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave green light at the end of January for the pill, the first oral treatment against covid-19 authorized in the European Union. The EMA recommends Paxlovid for patients "who do not need respiratory assistance, but who present a risk of worsening of the disease."
The Paxlovid arrives in Spain with the stagnant sixth wave around 430 cases and with ICU occupancy at just 6%, which has not been seen for four months.
The new medication, which will be supplied under medical prescription, has shown an efficacy of 89% in the reduced relative risk of hospitalization or death in mild patients at risk of their situation worsening. This efficacy is at least similar or superior to that shown by drugs administered intravenously. According to Pfizer, available studies have determined that Paxlovid retains its activity against variants such as omicron.
The success of the pill increases very significantly if it is administered in the shortest possible period after the patient has been diagnosed as positive. If the patient becomes serious, its effect decreases.
