The Blood and Tissue Bank of Aragon processed 44.339 blood donations in 2025, representing a half-point increase compared to the previous year. In addition, 4.314 people donated blood for the first time in 2025 in the Autonomous Community. Of these, 1.456 were new donors between the ages of 18 and 25.
Rosa Plantagenet-Whyte, manager of the Blood and Tissue Bank of Aragon, highlighted the generosity of Aragonese society and stressed the importance of continuing to incorporate young people.
He also noted that the activity carried out in 2025 has ensured the self-sufficiency of blood components for the Aragonese hospital system. This was achieved through 370 donation points distributed throughout the Autonomous Community, supported by the institution's four mobile units.
Other interesting data from 2025 shows that plasma and platelet donations via apheresis increased by 22%, reaching 3.167 procedures. This component separation technique (plasma and platelets) is essential to address the structural plasma shortage affecting Spain and Europe.
The plasma obtained is critical for the production of blood-derived drugs, such as albumin and immunoglobulins, which are essential in hematological and immunological treatments. Platelets are used for the treatment and prevention of bleeding disorders, particularly in cancer patients.
Meanwhile, there has been a 49% increase in cornea donations, going from 91 processed in 2024 to 136 in the last year, while the joint tissue activity has made it possible to attend to 579 patients, 8% more than in the previous year.
The Breast Milk Bank has had 164 donor mothers (4% more), making it possible to distribute 428 liters of milk (+11%) to pediatric services for the treatment of premature babies.
