The Stroke Unit of the 'Lozano Blesa' University Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza has completed one year of activity, in which it has treated 410 patients for this pathology. In this way, and through a multidisciplinary care model, patient survival is improved and sequelae are reduced, explained the Minister of Health, Sira Repollés, who toured its facilities this Wednesday, together with the manager of the Zaragoza III Sector, José. Ignacio Barrasa.
The unit opened at the end of September of last year and is located on the seventh floor of the Clinic. It has six beds monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since its implementation, the mortality associated with this pathology is below eight percent, when in previous years it was between 13 and 14 percent, Repollés stated.
Likewise, in this year of activity, complications have been detected in 42 percent of patients, with a very high rate of early detection of events through monitoring, up to 58 percent of the time, which has made it possible to advance the appropriate therapeutic measures to solve them more quickly.
Patient profile
The profile of the patients is, above all, male - 58 percent of the total cases - with an average age of 72 years, although people have been affected from ages 33 to 98. 78 percent of them have had an ischemic stroke and 22 percent have had a hemorrhagic stroke.
Patients with ischemic stroke have benefited in more than 20 percent of cases of recanalization therapies in the acute phase, 10 percent from thrombolysis, 7 percent from thrombectomy and 5,6 percent from both.
The patients have been referred from both the Clinic's health sector, 87 percent of the total, as well as from another health area, according to the referral criteria established in the Stroke Care Plan of Aragon.
Stroke is a sudden disorder in the blood circulation of the brain that can be caused by occlusion of a blood vessel. -ischemic in 85 percent of cases- or due to rupture of the vessel, with consequent bleeding -15 percent-.
More than 90 percent of them are directly related to one of the ten risk factors: high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia -elevated cholesterol-, sleep apnea, obesity and harmful lifestyle habits: smoking, alcohol abuse, sedentary lifestyle and stress.
With adequate correction and treatment of these risk factors, More than 90 percent of strokes could be reduced. In Aragon there are between 2.800 and 3.000 new cases of stroke per year.
