The Arrhythmia Unit team at the Clinical Hospital has become one of the main centers nationwide in offering a specialized technique that provides numerous benefits to patients who need a pacemaker. Specifically, it was at the beginning of last year when they applied a novel cardiac stimulation technique, known as stimulation of the area of the left branch framed within physiological stimulation. Throughout the year they have extensively developed the formula in such a way that more than 150 patients have already benefited from this pioneering therapy.
In the long term, the problem with pacemakers with conventional (non-physiological) stimulation is that they can reduce the strength of the heart, causing heart failure and increasing the risk of arrhythmias. Among the benefits of this new technique, which consists of the implantation of a pacemaker that stimulates the heart physiologically, include preventing patients with the same from developing arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation as well as avoiding the development of heart failure. , thus reducing hospitalizations and mortality compared to users of conventional pacemakers.
In addition to being presented as the first treatment option in patients with heart blockage, the latest scientific studies place it as a great option for patients who require cardiac resynchronization due to having lost heart synchrony due to a blockage in one of the branches that lead electricity on a regular basis. Also for those who have a heart that has ventricular dysfunction, meaning that it has lost part of its contractile force.
Dr. Ramos Maqueda, head of the Clinic's Arrhythmia Unit, comments that they have already started several research projects through the Aragon Health Research Institute (IISA) and that they are already publishing several articles on the matter with the intention of disseminating the technique at a national and international level. Furthermore, with the same intention they have contributed to the formation of at least five centers nationwide located in Zaragoza, Madrid, Lérida, Vizcaya and Barcelona.
