19 March, 2021A study published in The Lancet indicates that the majority of individuals who have already contracted coronavirus are protected against a new infection for at least six months.
A study published this Wednesday in The Lancet magazine reveals that reinfections due to covid-19 are "rare" although they are "more common" in people over 65 years of age, who have only 47% protection against a second infection, compared to 80% of younger individuals.
In the first large-scale investigation into this matter, experts from the Statens Serum Institute (Denmark) found that most individuals who have already contracted coronavirus are protected against a new infection for at least six months.
The analysis assessed reinfection rates detected in Denmark in 2020 and focused only on the original strain of the virus, and not on new variants that emerged subsequently.
