October 29, 2021The Aragón Health Research Institute organizes several courses aimed at different groups of professionals to detect risks through telephone support and social work.
The Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) has organized several training courses, which will be carried out in the coming weeks, aimed at different groups of professionals with the aim of enabling them to detect when there is a risk of suicide through telephone service, social work and dependency help, a novel initiative framed in the Suicide Prevention Strategy in Aragon.
“Research indicates that suicide prevention, although not easy as it is a complex phenomenon, is possible. A solution is always possible before making a decision of no return, although a series of actions must be carried out, ranging from environmental control of risk factors to the implementation of effective health policies regarding mental health that reinforce the factors. of protection,” says Isabel Irigoyen, psychiatrist at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza and scientific coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Strategy in Aragon. “With these courses, we guarantee one of the commitments of the Strategy, which is to train the people who take care of our elderly,” she adds.
In this sense, Irigoyen highlights that special emphasis has been placed on the segment of people over 70 years of age, since it is the age group where suicide is most common, with dementia and depression as the most common mental health illnesses. and that increase the risk of voluntarily wanting to take one's life. “This is because several factors occur such as social isolation, bereavement, loss of mobility, impairment of some senses, insomnia, chronic physical pain, low income… They can be a breeding ground for hopelessness and ideas of death,” Explain.
The first of the sessions, 'Telephone intervention in suicide risk', organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Zaragoza and sponsored by Janssen, took place on October 26 and was focused on operators of 112, 061, the Anti-Harassment Telephone, the Elderly Telephone, the Red Cross He Listens to You and other telecare services. The format was mixed (in-person and online, live and with access to the recording). Previously, training sessions for health professionals and pharmacists have already been carried out.
