39 percent of deaths due to work accidents during work hours are related to cardiovascular diseases, as revealed during the meeting 'Promotion of heart-healthy habits in the work environment', organized by the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC), with the collaboration of the National Institute of Safety and Health at Work (INSST).
On the other hand, the European Strategic Framework on Safety and Health at Work ensures that diseases of a cardiovascular nature are the second cause of death at work in Europe, representing almost 25 percent of deaths.
For his part, the director of the department of Health Promotion and Occupational Epidemiology of the INSST, Jerónimo Maqueda Blasco, has assured that the economic fabric is facing a transition towards 'global health' models, which involve companies committed to the health of the planet, society and working people. 2The International Labor Organization (ILO) refers to this reality when, on this April 28, it speaks of positive health,'" he added.
During the meeting, the impact that cardiovascular disease has on the work environment was reviewed, and the role of the determinants of cardiovascular health that affect the working population and the economic fabric, such as aging, cardiovascular morbidity, jobs sedentary, and stressors such as pace and workload.
Thus, it is known that of the almost 700.000 processes managed by the medical units of the National Social Security Institute (INSS) in 2019, 12 percent were for cardiovascular pathology. All of this with prevention as the central axis, both with regard to classic risk factors and psychosocial factors.
"Companies share the change produced after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, in terms of valuing health in a broad sense, and the new guidelines in the treatment and goals of health and safety in work, seeking an improvement in the work and mental well-being of workers and greater sustainability of companies", emphasized the expert in occupational risk prevention from the Department of Employment, Diversity and Social Protection of the Confederation of Business Organizations ( CEOE), Helena Morales de Labra.
