28 January 2020– The nearly 3.000 euros raised at the solidarity festival held last year in Pozuelo de Aragón and other complementary actions in the rest of the regional territory, will be allocated to a project aimed at the early detection of brain tumors, avoiding invasive biopsies through a novel imaging probe
– The Molecular Oncology group of the Aragón Health Research Institute led by Alberto Jiménez Schuhmacher and includes biochemists, biologists and biotechnologists together with surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, engineers and bioinformaticians will be the recipient of this collaborationZaragoza, January 24, 2020.
A group from the Aragón Health Research Institute will be able to advance in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer thanks to the different solidarity actions carried out by the Campo de Borja region, among which the festival to benefit the IIS Aragón stands out, held on December 14 in Pozuelo de Aragón, attended by more than 250 people and 19 companies collaborated. At the festival, which in its beginning was, in addition to a cultural event, a solidarity project in favor of the fight against cancer, 2.880 euros were raised.
The president of the Campo de Borja Region, Mª Eugenia Coloma, the culture councilor, Pedro Morales and the culture councilor of Pozuelo de Aragón, Rosa Heredia, visited the IIS Aragón this morning to present the check with the contribution, as well as to learn first-hand about the work carried out at the center. On the visit they were accompanied by Óscar López, Ángel Lanas and Luis Pablo, manager, director and deputy scientific director of the IIS Aragón respectively.
“We deeply appreciate the collaboration of the Campo de Borja Region with the IIS, since in addition to the quantity, which is important, it has served to raise awareness and obtain the collaboration of numerous people in the region and it is a source of pride for us” stated Ángel Lanas, scientific director of the IIS Aragón
The President of the Region, for her part, stated “that carrying out these solidarity actions has been especially gratifying, highlighting the great selfless involvement of the groups and people participating in the festival. From the first moment it was clear that the efforts wanted to be allocated to a research project carried out in the territory, finding in the IIS Aragón the best possible recipient”
Specifically, the funds raised will support the work carried out by the IIS Aragón with the project called “VIRTUAL BIOPSY: seeing invisible cancer”, from the Molecular Oncology group.
The research lines of the project focus on the development of “contrasts” to be detected with a scanner instead of analyzing a sample (biopsy), which is sometimes difficult to obtain, such as in brain tumors. These contrasts inform the nature of a tumor to decide whether to apply one treatment or another.

The laboratory works on the study of adult and pediatric brain tumors (some technically non-biopsyable) as well as pancreatic cancer. “The aid will serve to start with new contrasts and also to investigate new applications of these as therapeutic tools,” says ARAID researcher Alberto J. Schuhmacher, coordinator of the Molecular Oncology group at IIS Aragón.
Aragon Health Research Institute
