To better understand the process of metastasis in cancer, research from the University of Zaragoza and the IIS Aragón
October 19, 2023The project led by Alberto J. Schuhmacher, ARAID at IIS Aragón, seeks the development of new diagnostic methods, based on modified antibodies to detect the presence of a biomarker that could guide the treatment of some patients with osteosarcomas.
The Spanish Sarcoma Research Group (GEIS) awards this €16.000 scholarship with the aim of promoting research projects that promote the advancement of clinical therapeutics and knowledge of sarcomas.
The Spanish Sarcoma Research Group (GEIS) has delivered the XVII GEIS José Mª Buesa Scholarship to the project “Virtual biopsy, development of immunodirected tools for the non-invasive diagnosis of osteosarcoma” led by researcher Aragonese Alberto J. Schuhmacher, ARAID at the IIS Aragón.
GEIS, with the collaboration of FMPJC, ASARGA, VyDA Association and APSATUR (Association of Patients with Sarcomas and Rare Tumors of Aragon), awarded with this scholarship, which is named after Jaca oncologist José María Buesa a financing of €15.000, plus €1.000 of indirect expenses. The objective of this help is promote research projects that promote the advancement of clinical therapeutics and knowledge of sarcomas. The collaboration will consist of the following contributions, FMPJC €5.000, VYDA €5.000, APSATUR €3.000, ASARGA €1.000 and GEIS €2.000.
This winning project seeks the development of new diagnostic methods, based on antibodies modified to detect presence of a biomarker that could guide the treatment of some patients with osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone tumor in children and adolescents.

“This project was born from Celia, from her absence, whom we remember every day in the laboratory and also from Izarbe and Fernando. The team is developing a kind of “contrast” that sticks to a tumor only if it presents a biomarker, which could tell us whether or not a treatment might work. “I am very grateful to the GEIS Group for trusting in this risky project, we will work very hard on this very promising project,” he notes. Alberto J. Schuhmacher, who leads this line.
This research has a multidisciplinary team made up of researchers from the IIS Aragón, HU Miguel Servet, HU Vall d'Hebron, University of Navarra, Clínica Universidad de Navarra and CIEMAT.
Spanish Sarcoma Research Group (GEIS)
Due to the need to cooperate in the medical treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcomas, the Spanish Sarcoma Research Group (GEIS), thanks to the initiative of a small group of Medical oncologists from four hospitals. Currently, we are made up of professionals from more than sixty hospital centers throughout Spain, not only medical oncologists, but also surgeons, pediatricians, radiation oncology specialists, pathologists or molecular researchers. Since December 1997, the Group has had a legal entity in the form of a Scientific Association.
