The IIS Aragón Group «Research in Neurosciences» nominated for the Aragonese Awards of the Year
13 May 2022The traditional poll, which ends this Saturday, yesterday recovered its pre-pandemic format with 34 tables to obtain funds for research.
The Spanish Association against Cancer en Aragon It took to the streets again yesterday with its traditional annual survey, which recovered the pre-pandemic format, with 34 tables installed in different parts of the Aragonese capital in the morning and afternoon and eight more that will be installed tomorrow. This initiative aims to raise funds that will go towards research and support for patients and families. This event was the starting signal for the 'Make the fight against cancer your flag' campaign to encourage society to join the social movement and ensure that by 2030 seven out of ten people overcome the disease. In the Community, in 2021, 8.670 new cases of cancer were registered, a figure similar to that of 2020 (8.628).
According to Patxi García, director of the Spanish Association against Cancer in Aragon: "One in three of and one in two men will have cancer throughout our lives. And I speak in the first person because the probability is very high." Hence, he said, the need to insist on research. Currently, five-year survival in men is 55,3% and in women, 61,7%. "Thanks to the research, in recent years, Survival rates have increased 3,3 points in men and 2,6 in women, in an environment where the incidence has grown by 7,2% since 2016", they assured from the association.
The challenge is to continue advancing and reach 70% survival by 2030, that is, seven out of ten people with cancer survive the disease: "One of the keys is to correct inequities in access to research results , and for this it is necessary that all cancers undergo the necessary investigation to continue increasing their survival. In Spain, about 100.000 people are diagnosed each year with tumors with low or stagnant survival that would require further investigation. Nearly 20% of the projects promoted by the Association aim to investigate this type of tumors, to which it allocates more than 20 million euros. The Association has been promoting cancer research for 50 years with great results that have increased survival.

The plan to address the surgical waiting list, which the Department of Health presented this week, is marked as One of the objectives is that as of December 31, 2022, there will be no patients pending oncological surgery intervention with a delay of more than 30 days. For Patxi García this is an "affordable" goal: "We know that the Ministry has always had special sensitivity with oncological pathologies."
