There is a line that is important to know how to define between common concerns such as doubting whether the door at home has been closed correctly and those that represent a mental health problem, having to check it on several occasions due to the insecurity of not having done it correctly. and that this could lead to a bigger problem. Is it normal to be obsessed with something?
To answer this question, we would first have to ask another: what does obsession imply? According to psychologist Eva María González, from Sexologist Psychologists Zaragoza, who answers both questions, "in everyday language, words like "obsessive" or "maniacal" are used to refer to problematic forms of behavior that cause discomfort; considering that the behavior has reached a point that is not considered normal.
As obsessions are disturbing, rituals or compulsions are carried out, which are behaviors or thoughts that are adopted to obtain a certain relief, because they are the only ways that the person with obsessions has to control the restlessness.
Every time the obsessions begin, the person feels the urge to perform the ritual. That is, obsessions are thoughts or images that cause distress and compulsions are actions or thoughts that reduce that distress.
For example: To prevent theft, it is verified that doors and windows are properly closed, not once; but several times (it can be twenty or thirty), because there is doubt that the verification was carried out correctly.
