The new president of the Zaragoza College of Physicians took office this Tuesday, replacing Concha Ferrer.
The members of the Board of Directors of the Official College of Physicians of Zaragoza (COMZ) took office this Tuesday afternoon in a ceremony held in the headquarters' assembly hall. From now on Dr. Javier García Tirado presides over the collegiate institution, thus replacing Dr. Concha Ferrer. after having served two terms, the maximum allowed by the statutes.
Thus begins a new mandate in which The situation of Primary and Hospital Care and the approach to teaching and research work will constitute two of the priorities of the COMZ. “We must recover the essence of the direct relationship between doctor and patient,” said García Tirado in his investiture speech, putting emphasis on the battered situation that Primary Care is going through. “It needs a true organizational revolution that enables its complete regeneration, a motivation boost that allows it to recover the enthusiasm and commitment to the work of its professionals, and an adequate provision of resources,” he noted.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the president of the Courts of Aragon, Javier Sada; the one who has been president of the COMZ to date, Concha Ferrer; the Government Delegate in Aragon, Rosa Serrano; the Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon, Sira Ripolles; and the Secretary General of the Council of Official Medical Colleges, José María Rodríguez Vicente.
García Tirado, who thanked Ferrer for his “fruitful and intense” work, is committed to maintain the dynamism and accessibility of the institution and orient it to the needs of both members and society in general. In this sense, he has emphasized the role of medical professionals linked to teaching and research work, a group whose presence he would like to see grow within the COMZ. “We want to convey to you our firm and determined offer so that you can feel the protection of the College as an institution to which you can turn in order to propose initiatives and receive support,” he noted.
Furthermore, he has promised a “deep reflection, based on the best possible evidence and without ever denaturing the essence of Medicine,” to address controversial issues that “inevitably shake the ethical foundations of professional practice.””, such as the Organic Law regulating euthanasia, the Law on Rights and Guarantees of People in the Dying Process, or the Law on assisted human reproduction techniques, as well as to combat so-called pseudosciences or pseudotherapies.
During the inauguration, the newly appointed president of the COMZ also had words for public administration doctors, young professionals and retired or disabled members. “We have the firm intention of maintain their protection through the collegiate offer of social action, leisure and culture, or the PAIMA and PASYAD programs,” he commented.
Javier García Tirado's speech has been a firm defense of the health system and to maintain it, he pointed out, "we must dignify professional practice, providing it with the necessary means, and working in partnership with citizens, exercising an essential pedagogy of health and the rational use of health resources."
The new COMZ Board of Directors, chaired by García Tirado, also includes Dr. José Manuel Cardiel Pérez as First Vice President; Dr. Carmen Puig as Second Vice President; Dr. Alfredo Pérez Lambán as Third Vice President; and Dr. Miguel Ángel Simón Marco as Fourth Vice President. The Board, regarding the Permanent Commission, is completed by Dr. Belén Lomba García as Secretary; Dr. Javier Fuentes Olmo as Vice Secretary; and Dr. Concepción Blasco Gimeno as Treasurer.
Regarding the members, Dr. José Manual Cucalón Arenal has sworn in as Member of Rural Primary Care Doctors; Dr. Aurita Auría Lambán as Member of Urban Primary Care Doctors; Dr. Reyes Ibáñez Carreras as a Member of Hospital Doctors; Dr. Juan Bosco Calatayud as Member of Private Practice Doctors; Dr. Guillermo Viguera Alonso as Member of Young Doctors and Employment Promotion; Dr. Gloria Fernández-Velilla as Member of Public Administration Doctors; Dr. Paloma López Marín as Member of Retired Doctors; and Dr. Jorge Albareda as Member of Medical Tutors and Teachers.
The candidacy of Javier García Tirado was the only one presented after the call for elections to the Board of Directors on September 7, so in accordance with Article 44 of the statutes, it was not necessary to hold elections.

Javier García Tirado has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Autonomous University of Madrid, a doctor in Medicine Cum Laude from the University of Zaragoza, member of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular and full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Zaragoza. Specialist in Thoracic Surgery and Head of Thoracic Surgery Service at the Miguel Servet University Hospital of Zaragoza and in the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital, until now he has also served as 1st Vice President of the Zaragoza College of Physicians.
