Doping with bacteria against muscle fatigue
August 27, 2019The project is in its first year of exploration, and aims to improve the designs of intraocular lenses used after surgery and provide doctors with 3D tools to care for patients.
Despite these arguments, it remains an unknown condition for the majority of the population. In Spain, around 500.000 surgical interventions are performed per year and the waiting list in the Autonomous Communities is increasing. The Ministry of Health collects the situation of waiting lists in the National Health System and places them at an average of 62 days.
Currently, it is not a complex surgery. It is corrected by removing the crystalline lens and replacing the natural lens with an artificial one. Where do the main problems arise? Some patients suffer complications after the operation, refractive errors are not corrected and the patient must continue wearing glasses.
Members of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Zaragoza are working to resolve these setbacks. Begoña Calvo, Laura Remón, Iulen Cabeza and Miguel Ángel Ariza complete a team of opticians and engineers, who prepare a lens design study to avoid postoperative difficulties. In the field work they have obtained 6 optimal cases of the more than 1.000 designs analyzed of a type of lens called C-loop.
The company AJL, the Spanish market leader in the manufacture of intraocular lenses, has agreed to manufacture these six prototypes to take the next step, since the study does not end there.
