21 December, 2022In Aragon, on average, one suicide is committed every 3 days. Suicide is not a vital alternative but, on the contrary, it is a consequence of psychological suffering that can be prevented and avoided by receiving health care. The therapeutic relationship established between health professionals and citizens is an optimal context to detect emotional discomfort, the suffering of those considering suicide, and to be able to act to prevent it. The LGTBIQ+ population is presented in studies as one of the groups with the greatest psychosocial risk and vulnerability and, Compared to the general population, there is a higher vital prevalence of suicidal ideation, self-harming behavior and deaths from this cause. In general, they rate their mental health less well and report more psychological problems, with specific risk factors being stigma and experiences of discrimination in personal interactions. This highlights the need to implement tools that help optimize assistance, as well as to make known the existing resources and services in Aragon. From the Suicide Prevention Strategy in Aragon we encourage the dissemination of this initiative among health professionals.
