Aragón has detected 2.766 cases of breast cancer since the screening program began
October 21, 2019They assure that through mechanisms such as biomarkers it is possible to make "the patient's immunity become aggressive against that tumor, making him recognize that this is something that must be fought against."
Immunotherapy, which prepares the individual to fight a disease himself, is “the great revolution” in the field of oncology and “will cure cancer,” according to experts in oncology who highlight that this type of therapy offers “results.” positive in practically everything.”
This was stated in the EFE Health Dialogues on Breast Cancer by the Quirónsalud Torrevieja medical oncology specialist Joseba Rebollo, who has shown his confidence that "immunotherapy will cure cancer", a statement that may sound "a little daring", although he has "the conviction that, in fact, he is already doing it."
Rebollo explained that "there are industry bets and there is research development" with "palpable results", especially in the "most aggressive types of tumor without much therapeutic resource."
The oncologist has stated that immunotherapy requires "not only knowing the tumor, but knowing the patient and seeing how it interacts with the tumor", so, through mechanisms such as biomarkers, which can also be manipulated, it is possible to achieve " that the patient's immunity becomes aggressive against that tumor, making him recognize that this is something that must be fought against."
At the meeting, some of the advances in treatments against breast cancer were discussed, a disease that is diagnosed in more than 32.000 women each year in Spain and that affects almost 20% of the female population.
Among these advances, experts have highlighted intraoperative radiotherapy, which consists of, during the same operation in which the largest possible part of the tumor is removed, the adjacent part is irradiated, which allows the same effectiveness as external radiotherapy, although without side effects.
The specialist in Radiation Oncology at Quironsalud Salud Torrevieja Rosa Cañón has explained that intraoperative radiotherapy is applied during the intervention after the removal of the tumor from the mother and the study of the sentinel lymph node, and treats only the breast next to the removed tumor, which is the higher risk, avoiding irradiation, for example, of the skin that will not have side effects.
He added that "the surgery is only prolonged by about 30 minutes and the need to go for 20-30 days to receive conventional external radiotherapy treatment is eliminated, which results in a great improvement in quality of life."
