Biomedical Seminar: «Neurological Paraneoplastic Syndromes»

The antitumor adaptive immune response is the first line of defense against tumors. However, the overexpression of neuronal antigens and expression of neoantigens by some neoplasms makes us susceptible to loss of tolerance against our own antigens, causing an unwanted immune response against the central nervous system. As part of this response, antibodies and autoreactive lymphocytes responsible for the so-called Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes (PNS) are produced. These diseases in a high percentage precede the diagnosis of the tumor, so detecting and diagnosing them early is crucial for patients who suffer from them. Autoantibodies related to these syndromes are essential diagnostic biomarkers and have become an essential tool for the management of patients with PNS.
