El Aragon Health Research Institute in collaboration with Renal and Cardiovascular Physiopathology Research Group (FISIOPREN), the Urology Research Group Miguel Servet University Hospital (URO-SERVET) and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zaragoza They organize on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 17:00 p.m. el Biomedical Seminar «Role of the afferent pathways of the urinary bladder in the host response to urinary infections»
Seminar Summary:
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections, affecting more than 150 million people worldwide each year. As a consequence, UTIs have a detrimental impact on patients' quality of life and impose an enormous economic burden on communities and health services. These infections are often recurrent and are increasingly difficult to treat due to the widespread emergence of antibiotic-resistant uropathogens. While the primary symptoms of UTIs—urgency, frequency, and dysuria—reflect the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in the host response, little is known about the interaction between sensory afferents and the immune system and how this affects the progression of the UTI. disease. Dr. Carattino's presentation focuses on the role that afferent neurons innervating the urinary bladder play in the host response to UTI.
Speaker:
Dr. Marcelo Carattino, associate professor and Co-Director of the Physiology Center at the Pittsburgh Kidney Research Center.
