Master's Degree in Tumor Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy

March 20, 2023 @ 10:04 am

The innovations introduced in cancer immunotherapy since 2010 are changing the way cancer patients are treated. It is not in vain that cancer immunotherapy was considered the most important scientific advance of the year in 2013 by Science magazine and the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine was awarded in 2018 to the pioneers in this field, Jim Allison and Tasuku Honjo. Since then, patients with various types of cancer, some of them without possible treatment until then, have benefited from these therapies, and the number of cancer types in which regulatory agencies approve these new treatments is gradually increasing and will continue to do so. in the near future.
Oncologists and other internal medicine doctors have some training in Immunology, but it may not be enough to fully understand how these new therapies are working in their patients. This is also due to the progress in understanding the immune system that has been made in the last 20 years and which continues, now at a greater speed due to the realization of its practical usefulness. That is why this Master's Degree, although taught by the Faculty of Medicine, is open and may be of interest to students from various biomedical and biotechnological fields who have research interests. This is why it is considered essential to promote these studies at the University of Zaragoza, to, starting from basic concepts about the functioning of the immune system and neoplastic transformation, allow students to understand in detail the mechanisms that make these therapies work in patients, as well as determining what may be the best markers to predict whether these treatments will work for an individual patient.
Organizers: organized by the Master's Degree in Tumor Immunology and Cancer Immunotherapy (ITIC) Immunity, Cancer and Diseases of Infectious Origin or Molecular Basis Program Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) Faculty of Medicine, University of Zaragoza
