At the end of last April, the National Sero-Epidemiology Study of SARS-CoV-2 Infection began in Spain. The results of the first phase of this study, including estimates of the prevalence of COVID 19 by geographic areas and demographic groups, were explained in an online dialogue, held by the Ramón Areces Foundation, on July 16.
The recovery of activity since June has been accompanied by resurgences of infection and a growing number of cases. For this reason, a second phase of this study has been launched with three objectives: estimate the percentage of the population that currently has antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in Spain, determine the percentage of people who have acquired antibodies since first epidemic wave and study the evolution of antibodies and the factors associated with their persistence.
After this second phase of the study, we have new data about the evolution of the pandemic that suggests new questions such as: How has the evolution of the pandemic been in the second wave? Has it been the same severity as the first wave? How persistent is the immunity to this infection? Will the immunity acquired with vaccines... be comparable to that produced by contagion?
