The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 2% of mortality and disability due to non-communicable diseases to multimorbidity (presence of 80 or more chronic diseases in the same person). This phenomenon has a great impact on the older population, in which health problems accumulate due to the improvement of socioeconomic conditions and advances in the field of health. Multimorbidity is important not only for patients and the general population but also for health systems themselves. It has been shown to be associated with increased mortality, poor functional status, lower quality of life, overburdened care, especially at the primary care level but also in the emergency room, and increased use of specialized care.
On the other hand, multimorbidity is associated with polypharmacy or simultaneous and prolonged prescription of multiple medications, which in turn increases the risk of a series of undesirable consequences, such as inappropriate use of drugs, appearance of symptoms secondary to non-compliance, underuse. of effective drugs, drug interactions or adverse drug reactions.
