Bio(technology): from the laboratory to outer space. Session 373 Ateneo

April 9, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 PM

Biotechnology encompasses any technological application that uses biological systems and living organisms to create or modify products or processes for specific uses. The range of applications, known as "the colors of biotechnology," encompasses everything from medicine to sustainable agriculture and climate change mitigation. This goal of advancing knowledge through interdisciplinary use of technology is the driving force behind a biomedical researcher becoming an astronaut, as human space exploration and microgravity research promote scientific and technological advances for the benefit of humanity, with practical applications in our daily lives.

Sara García-Alonso (senior researcher at the National Cancer Research Center and member of the European Space Agency's astronaut reserve) will lead this session at the University of Zaragoza Athenaeum on Wednesday, April 9.

Sara García-Alonso was selected from nearly 23.000 candidates as a reserve astronaut for the European Astronaut Corps, becoming the first Spanish woman to achieve this status. She is considered one of the 35 leading Spanish women in technology and among the 100 most influential women in Spain, according to Forbes and Magas-El Español. She recently published her first book, "Órbitas."

The session is part of the Girls' Day celebrations during the 16th Engineering and Architecture Week. It will be moderated by Alberto J. Schuhmacher (Head of the Molecular Oncology Group at the IIS Aragón).

To attend in person (Assembly Hall, Betancourt Building, Río Ebro Campus) it is necessary to complete the following form.

It can also be followed through the EINA YouTube channel.
