Eleven pharmaceutical companies associated with Farmaindustria coordinate these trials or collaborate in other public initiatives by providing the necessary medication.
Spain is a reference country in the world in carrying out clinical trials to test the effectiveness of new medicines developed by pharmaceutical companies. The research race to search for a therapeutic solution against the coronavirus shows this leading role of our country in this area. Up to 58 clinical trials with medications that prove their effectiveness against the coronavirus have been approved or are already in development in Spanish hospitals, in which up to eleven pharmaceutical companies associated with Farmaindustria participate. In addition, another 67 observational studies have also been launched in our country to evaluate the effectiveness of medications in real clinical practice. These trials are involving more than 332 participations from Spanish hospitals and it is expected that up to 28.000 patients will benefit from access to these trials, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
The International Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Ifpma) – the global association of the sector, to which Farmaindustria belongs – highlights that pharmaceutical companies around the world are testing the effectiveness of just over 130 medications or combinations of medications against the coronavirus. “And Spain is one of the countries in the world with the highest number of clinical trials underway,” says Humberto Arnés, general director of Farmaindustria.
In fact, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organization, Spain is currently the fourth country in the world where the most clinical trials with medicines are being carried out to see their effectiveness against the coronavirus. This classification, which includes trials until May 5, places China as the country with the most clinical trials with patients, with 154, followed by the US (109) and Iran (63). Spain appears after these three countries, with 51 clinical trials (the Spanish Registry of Clinical Trials, as has been said, already counts 58). In Europe, Spain is followed in number of trials by France (51 trials), the United Kingdom (17), Germany (16), Denmark (13) and Italy (11).
