October 22, 2019The pathologist from Boltaña (Huesca) was selected for his research work on the chronic leukemia genome plan.
The prestigious Aragonese pathologist and researcher Elías Campo Güerri, born in Boltaña (Huesca) in 1955, entered the United States Academy of Medicine last Saturday on "a glorious and very endearing day," as he described. The director of Research at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Idibaps and the Clinic Foundation for Biomedical Research was accompanied at the event by his family (his wife and three children, who reside in the United States and one is a researcher at the University of Stanford) at the headquarters of the Academy of Medicine in Washington. He was also accompanied by several of his mentors as a researcher and specialist in the chronic lymphocytic leukemia genomic project.
He received the diploma first, among the ten chosen in internal voting by the members of the prestigious institution. In the afternoon, Elías Campo participated in a scientific day with all those selected. There he was able to present his presentation regarding the research of the chronic leukemia genome plan, in which he has been collaborating closely for years with the professor of Biochemistry Carlos López-Otín, a native of Sabiñánigo, at the University of Oviedo. At night, they attended a massive dinner in tribute to the chosen doctors.
A week ago, the magazine 'Nature' published the latest finding of cancer mutations in unexplored areas of the genome in which the Aragonese researcher participated.
The royal pathologist
Elías Campo has worked in medical care for thousands of patients at the Clinic hospital. In 2010, he examined King Juan Carlos's lung nodule under a microscope, four years before his son Felipe VI abdicated. His diagnosis ruled out that the monarch had cancer and told him that it was benign. In addition, Campo teaches Pathological Anatomy classes (in the third year) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona.
