October 20, 2025The IIS Aragón is leading the project "Unlocking Data Content Of Organ-On-Chips", funded by the State Research Agency, which focuses on the study of the tumor environment and its response to breast cancer treatments.
The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) has allocated 76,7 millones de euros from 2018 to research projects on breast cancer, channeled through the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the State Research Agency (AEI) and the Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI).
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana morant, on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day, emphasized that "science is one of the most powerful tools we have to save lives, and that is why the Spanish Government is committed to cancer research, particularly breast cancer, which affects thousands of women in our country each year."
“Investment in biomedical research is allowing us to develop new diagnostic tools, more personalized therapies, and cutting-edge technologies that make medicine more effective and humane,” said Minister Morant.
The ISCIII finances 169 projects for 30,5 million euros
Since 2018, the ISCIII has funded 169 research projects on breast cancer with a total investment of 30,5 million euros through projects linked to calls for Independent Clinical Research, Health Research Projects, Personalized Precision Medicine Projects, among others.
One of the most notable projects is "Validation of a multifactorial breast cancer risk prediction model, incorporating clinical, genetic, and imaging biomarkers, in the Spanish population," supported by European funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan within the framework of the PERTE for Cutting-Edge Health.
This ambitious project, co-led by the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and the Santiago de Compostela Health Research Institute, has a €1.284.000 grant and involves research teams from more than a dozen Spanish autonomous communities. The main objective is to clinically validate a multifactorial breast cancer risk prediction model, a tool based on the principles of Precision Medicine that, in addition to mammography, integrates genetic, clinical, and mammographic factors to provide an individualized risk estimate.
Likewise, the ISCIII researches breast cancer through CIBERONC (Cancer Thematic Area of the Biomedical Research Network Center). It has a Breast and Gynecological Cancer Research Program which integrates in a multidisciplinary and collaborative manner seven research groups specialized in these pathologies, to address their main problems from basic science to the most clinical aspects. In addition, the National Cancer Research Center Foundation (FCNIO-ISCIII) has the Breast Cancer Clinical Research Unit.
The CDTI exceeds 30 million euros in R&D funding
Since 2018, the CDTI Innovation has allocated more than 30 million euros to R&D projects aimed at improving early detection, prevention, treatment and monitoring of breast cancer.
It also promotes the development of advanced therapies, financing and co-investing in biotechnology companies through its SICC Innvierte instrument, and is participating with €21,8 million in the creation of the first national research infrastructure for hadrontherapy based on carbon ion accelerators. This pioneering technology will enable more precise cancer treatments that, in the future, could be applied to breast cancer.
Among the most relevant projects are the development of a new micropigmentation machine High-precision technology for reconstructing the nipple-areola complex in mastectomized women; the clinical validation of an oral formulation of nanoencapsulated paclitaxel intended to improve the bioavailability and efficacy of breast cancer treatment; and a cyber-physical early detection system based on the analysis of volatile biomarkers in urine, among other advances.
The AEI finances 77 projects for more than 16,2 million euros.
The AEI has funded 77 breast cancer research projects between 2018 and 2025, with a total investment of more than €16,2 million.
Among the projects stands out Unlocking Data Content Of Organ-On-Chips from the Aragon Health Research Institute Foundation, which studies how the tumor environment modifies cellular phenotypes and how they respond to conventional treatments, key to the study of breast cancer metastasis. This project is part of the European project UNLOOC (Unlocking the data content of Organ-on-Chips), which focuses on generating organ-on-chip-based technologies to reduce animal testing and develop new medicines.
