The researcher Carlos Martín has won the general Aragonese Prize of the Year after having been the candidate most voted for by readers of THE ARAGON NEWSPAPER among the 20 nominees who competed for awards in the different categories in a special ceremony in which these awards celebrate their 30th anniversary. The distinction thus recognizes the research work carried out by the Mycobacterial Genetics group at the University of Zaragoza and Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón), headed by the professor, in the tuberculosis vaccine, which has all the ingredients to be a milestone in medicine. The doses could reach the market between 2027 and 2028.
“First of all, I collect the award on behalf of many people, with a project that began in the 80s. Thanks to all the people who have supported us during all this time. It is a huge project that we never thought would be as big as it is. And it has been from a university and from a Spanish company. That effort now has to be multiplied because we want it to be a national project and that is why the enthusiasm we have is enormous,” Martín highlighted after collecting the award.
El President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, has delivered to Carlos Martín of the dove-shaped award, the work of sculptor José Antonio Barrios, which symbolizes recognition and gratitude to those who with their efforts contribute to making Aragon a prosperous and thriving land in areas such as economy, society, science, culture or sport.
The gala held at the Mozart Room of the Zaragoza Auditorium was attended by Javier Moll, president of Prensa Ibérica, editor of the newspaper; Arantza Sarasola, vice president; Aitor Moll, CEO, and Ainhoa Moll, editorial director; Nicolás Espada, deputy general director of content in Aragón, and the director of EL PERIÓDICO DE ARAGÓN, Ricardo Barceló. The advisors of the Government of Aragon also attended; and the Mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, among other councilors and councilors of Aragonese municipalities, as well as representatives of the economic, cultural, sports and civil society spheres.
Rest of winners

In the category of Human values, Aspace Foundation won the award on its 50th anniversary. The entity offers a comprehensive response to the needs of people with cerebral palsy and their families through different services and equipment that seek to achieve the maximum degree of autonomy. The Mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, gave the distinction to the president of the board, Consuelo Ciria, and the foundation manager, Mónica Iglesias.
La Ascaso film exhibition, an example that culture can reverse depopulation, was the winner in the category of Culture. The Boltaña district was abandoned and, today, thanks to the momentum that has been achieved with the contest, 11 people live there.
At the end of August it will celebrate its 13th edition under the skies of the Aragonese Pyrenees. His director, Miguel Cordeo, received the award from the CEO of Prensa Ibérica, Aitor Moll.
And in Sports, the soccer player Salma paralluelo She took the award after a dream year in 2023 as champion of the League, Spanish Super Cup and Champions League with FC Barcelona. She was a fundamental piece in the Spanish team that won the absolute World Cup for the first time, being also chosen as the best young player of the tournament, and this year she has achieved poker with the Copa de la Reina held in La Romareda. Iñaki Navarro, deputy general director and territorial director of the Northern Zone of Banco Sabadell, gave the statuette to José Jaime Paralluelo, brother of Salma.
Special and Honor Awards
Furthermore, the Aragonese of the Year celebrated their 30 º aniversario and they did it with a special category. The Zaragoza Food Bank He was chosen thanks to the votes of readers among a list of eight candidates, who either complete three decades of experience in 2024 or marked a milestone 30 years ago. This non-profit association was created by a group of Zaragoza residents in June 1994 and, since then, has worked to facilitate access to food for those who need it most. His president, José Ignacio Alfaro, received the award from the president of Prensa Ibérica, Javier Moll.
Another of the most emotional moments of the evening came when the businessman's brothers Cesar Alierta, who died in January, went on stage to collect the Aragonese Honor Award posthumously from the hands of the director of EL PERIÓDICO DE ARAGÓN, Ricardo Barceló, and the newspaper manager, Cristina Sánchez. The gala, which brought together more than a thousand guests and was presented by newspaper journalists Jorge Heras, Laura Rabanaque and Iván Trigo, was sponsored by Telefónica, Banco Sabadell, Zaragoza City Council and Government of Aragon.
