They discover how tumor cells camouflage themselves in the bloodstream
25 February, 2022The Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) has participated today in 'El Rincón de la Ciencia', an initiative to give visibility and promote scientific dissemination that takes place on the last Friday of each month at the San Francisco Campus of the University of Zaragoza and in which different university research centers and institutes show their projects and carry out experiments and activities for all visitors.
On this occasion, the IIS Aragón researchers Marta Baselga and Ángela Abejez have explained how respiratory infectious diseases are transmitted, regarding the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, answering questions such as how aerosols are generated, how they travel through the air, how dangerous it is. breathing the same air as an infected individual, how masks work and what the difference is between them. “We have used a human simulator to recreate the generation of aerosols and we have experienced how each type of mask works. We have also shown microscopic photographs of each type of mask to understand the differences,” explains Baselga. “It is important to understand the transmission mechanisms to, individually, prevent contagion and, collectively, implement epidemiological prevention measures considering the predominant routes of pathogen spread,” adds the IIS Aragón researcher.
The recipients of these exhibitions, which last between 15 and 20 minutes, are the general public: the experiments are intended for younger visitors, while the level of complexity of the dissemination is adjusted depending on the age of the participants.
