The Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragon) meets 10 yearsThe Institute, formed by the 'Lozano Blesa' and 'Miguel Servet' University Hospitals, Primary Health Care, the University of Zaragoza and the Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences, celebrates a decade of effort, innovation and progress in biomedical research in Aragon.
Over these ten years, The IIS Aragón has consolidated its position as one of the main drivers of biomedical research in Spain, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the search for solutions to the most pressing health challenges.
The institute is currently composed of 92 research groups, formed by more than 1.300 researchers, covering various areas of health and biomedicine, with more of 4.000 m² of spaces dedicated to research, providing an appropriate environment for innovation and scientific collaboration. In addition, over these ten years, it has managed more than 400 competitive projects and Has got 6.921 scientific publications, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and consolidating the institute's reputation on the international scene.
In addition, the IIS Aragón, through its Clinical Research Unit, is responsible for manage the clinical trials carried out in all hospitals and primary care centres in Aragon. In this area, the Institute has More than 1.000 clinical trials initiated, allowing the application of research results to medical practice and benefiting thousands of patients.
Among the objectives of the institution is the research approach basic and applied, clinical and health services, as well as the creation of a quality research, care and teaching environment. In addition, the entity actively promotes the iIntegration of professionals health professionals, training specialists, postgraduate and undergraduate students, establishing a link between research and clinical practice. Over these 10 years, more than XNUMX projects have been developed. 1.500 collaborations with companies which have amounted to more than 30 million euros invoiced, demonstrating the strong link between scientific research and business innovation. In this sense, the Institute has achieved more of 70 million euros of funds raised for research, a clear indicator of the confidence and relevance of the IIS Aragón in the scientific field.
Commemorative Gala
To highlight all the milestones achieved throughout this decade, yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, November 26, the IIS Aragón celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special gala at CaixaForum Zaragoza.
The event, which included the institutional inauguration of the Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon, José Luis Bancalero, began with the screening of a documentary that covers the 10 years of the Institute through the people who have been part of its history.
“Initially, this Institute brought together 50 research groups. Thanks to this Institute, it has been possible to have a top-level biomedical research and innovation, being a key player in ensuring the transfer and translation of this research to the environment and patients. In addition, the IIS Aragón also has an important role as a unifying element and facilitating agent of public-private collaboration and a great example of this is the development of the Advanced Therapies Unit to open next year"

This was followed by a talk to highlight the Institute's history, led by Ángel Lanas, Scientific Director, and Óscar López, Executive Director.

This conversation gave way to a round table with researchers who spoke about these 10 years of biomedical research and their future projections.

In addition, the IIS Aragón took advantage of this event to deliver their annual research grants whose main objective is to promote research at all levels, one of the most important annual events for the Institute, for which €339.000 has been allocated. On the occasion of the publication of the “IIS Aragón 2024 Intramural Call for Research Promotion”, an initiative aimed at supporting researchers and research groups at the IIS Aragón, this important event awarded grants to the most outstanding consolidated, emerging and associated groups, as well as mobility grants to resident researchers and predoctoral researchers, grants for the hiring of faculty staff to train in research, grants for research communication actions and grants for healthcare innovation actions. To conclude this emotional day, the closing ceremony was led by the rector of the University of Zaragoza, José Antonio Mayoral.
